Our Concerns

(for a downloadable version of this page, click here)

We work hard to make Westbrook a great place in which to live, work, and raise our families. Will the Planning Board’s decision jeopardize our vision for the future?

TRAFFIC NOISE, VIBRATION AND ROAD DETERIORATION
A steady stream of lumbering diesel dump trucks will travel on Spring Street, one of the most congested roads in Westbrook.

NOISE
Blasting, drilling, heavy equipment operations and rock crushing will routinely occur.

FUMES
The odors of asphalt manufacture can be noxious.

BLASTING
Vibrations impact natural underground waterways and could negatively affect surrounding businesses, including Smiling Hill Farms.

HEALTH
• The toxins in the fumes produced by asphalt manufacture are linked to a variety of serious health problems.
• Airborne dust from blasting, drilling, rock crushing and heavy truck traffic is associated with respiratory illnesses and other conditions.

ENVIRONMENT
• Clark’s Brook, which drains into the Stroudwater River, flows directly through the expanded quarry site.
• Clearing of large acreage and altering wetlands threaten wildlife habitats and displace animals in the area.

SAFETY
Besides the possible health side effects, there is no buffering between the CMP power lines and the quarry. This could also pose safety issues for area neighbors.

PROPERTY VALUES
Properties neighboring the asphalt plant may decline in value.

VISION
The expanded quarry operation is inconsistent with the City’s Comprehensive Plan to promote business growth in the area.
